LITHA AND THE SUMMER SOLSTICE
TOTEM: HORSE MOON
“Light. Today I enjoy every minute of the longest daylight of the year. Open to what is revealed for me today by the sun’s rays.”
Lithe, the Anglo-Saxon name for this time of year, is when the God and Goddess are strongest as a couple and is a wondrous time for spell casting around strengthening relationships, your career path and your spiritual resolve.
It is also a time of completion and a time for giving thanks for spells that have worked. The food for this Sabbat is honey cakes, a deep fried batter mixed with flower petals then dipped in honey while still warm.
Summer Solstice celebrates the longest day and the shortest night of the calendar year. Wiccan celebrate by rising before dawn and , after lighting a candle, turn towards the horizon where Sun will rise. A prayer is said to the Sun God, Lugh, to thank him for warmth, energy and to ask for good weather. As the Sun rises the candle is blown out and is re-lit at Sun down. Celebrating the Summer Solstice reminds us that nothing lasts forever. We do not live in the unchanging twilight realm of Faery, but in the living, dying, fading and growing realm of Earth. It reminds us to embrace those we love all the more closely while they are here.
The Summer Solstice is also a time to practice giving things away, letting go of what is completed and done. The letting go, though never easy, is really about Change and transformation of one thing into another.
Solstice is a fire festival and for thousands of years. In Wales a huge wooden circle is lit and rolled down the hills, while in Norway people light bonfires on the beaches and sit up all night with them. In parts of England a Wicker Man is constructed, decorated with flowers and filled with offerings. As the offerings are burnt we can feel happy and sad at the same time, honoring your feelings is allowed, it’s all part of life.
Father’s are celebrated at this time. It’s only natural since fathers plant the seed of life and give nurturance and protection to their children.
